Frequently Asked Questions
What is fruit fly media made of?
FlyCafe Ultimate Fruit Fly Media is made from 100% natural ingredients including brewer's yeast for high protein, natural mold inhibitors, extra calcium, and added vitamins — no artificial preservatives. The Premium blend uses the same natural formula at a lower protein concentration, ideal for D. melanogaster cultures.
How much fruit fly media do I need per culture?
A standard 32oz deli container culture requires approximately 1–1.5 oz (28–42g) of dry media mixed with water. A 1 lb bag makes roughly 10–12 cultures. A 5 lb bag makes 50–60 cultures, and a 10 lb bag makes 100–120 cultures.
What is aspen excelsior used for in fruit fly cultures?
Aspen excelsior is coarsely shredded natural wood fiber placed on top of the media. It gives flies a surface to walk on, prevents drowning, and increases usable surface area inside the container. FlyCafe uses undyed, natural aspen excelsior in every culture.
Why use dried oak leaves in a dart frog vivarium?
Dried oak leaves create a naturalistic leaf litter layer that mimics the forest floor. They provide hiding spots for frogs, support microfauna populations, and slowly break down to enrich the substrate. FlyCafe's field-collected southern/live oak leaves are safe for dart frogs and other tropical vivarium inhabitants.
What size deli container should I use for fruit fly cultures?
The standard is a 32oz clear deli container with a pre-vented mesh lid. The mesh allows gas exchange while keeping flies contained. FlyCafe's pre-vented 32oz containers are the same format used by professional breeders and are compatible with all FlyCafe media and excelsior products.
